Sponsored by STAC, a carpool bulletin board has been put up in the Student Commons! Students are encouraged to post their information to coordinate rides with other students. The board is mapped by area and there are information cards to be filled out.

It is located on the student services section of the "announcement wall" in the student commons facing the smoking deck. STAC hopes that this becomes a service that many students will utilize to help curb the rising cost of gas.

Jam Out

President: Jeff McKerren

Vice President: Keith Schafer

Treasurer: Shane Wojtaszczyk

Jam Out is a music club designed to help students express themselves further in their education. Whether you play a musical instrument or not, you are encouraged to join if you have a love for music! This club has no problem helping out other students that are at a lower skill level than other members in the club as well. Also, students who don't know how to play an instrument are still able to help out in any way that is appropriate for the club, such as designing flyers based on the music. Jam Out will accept any students and will not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, national origin, religion, disability, or sexual preference and is open to all Art Institute of Portland students in good standing with the school. Our goal in this club is to encourage students to express themselves musically and be able to connect with other players. This will build students confidence. We try to get venues for school functions and events such as graduation and orientation. In doing so, students can gain confidence by playing in front of an audience and help further their social interactions, including clients and job interviews. Music is an art form like any other degree offered at the school and should be acknowledged, however the main goal overall in Jam Out is to have fun!

Our mission is to share our passion for stop-motion animation with "like minds" in pursuit of similar goals while advancing our skills. Our first challenge is to develop a secure stop-motion lab at AiPD. Our ultimate goal is the creation and production of one or perhaps several "festival worthy" short films, while building relationships, networking skills, experience, and character, which are all major ingredients of success.

Jane Brown (Academic Dean Emeritus) plays viola with the Beaverton Chamber Symphony.  The Symphony’s Winter Concert will be held on February 28th at 8 pm and March 1st  at 3 pm at the Oak Hills Christian Reformed Church: 2815 NW Forest Ave. The program includes: Beethoven’s Fidelio Overture,; Brahms’ Symphony #1, and Haydn’s Symphony #101, “The Clock”.

Damien Gilley (Adjunct Instructor, Graphic Design) presents SHOOT YOU – SHOOT ME at Rocks Box, February 14 – March 1, in collaboration with Modou Dieng.  The artists examine the relationship between contemporary guerilla warfare, high fashion, and the artists’  approach to the creative process, while attempting to break down the predictability of perceived artistic production, display, and the consumption of mass imagery.

Josh Smith, (Adjunct Instructor, Industrial Design) will exhibit his work in February at The Manuel Izquierdo Gallery at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in a show titled The righteous foundation of us.
This work is the manifestation of Smith's interest in modernism, particularly in its early philosophies regarding hive and colony structures. The repeated cylinder, constructed with hast and utilizing inexpensive materials, is both architecture and organic form. February 5th - 26th at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, Manuel Izquierdo Sculpture Gallery, 825 NW 13th Avenue, Portland.

Michael Gutmann (Adjunct Instructor, Math) will have an article published in Futures Magazine, Feb. 2009, a widely circulated publication for the commodity futures trading industry. The article is titled, “Calibrating Profit and Loss Strategies.”  The article makes use of directed graph theory as a means of computing trade strategy expected value, and is a good example for our students of how math is used in the “real world.”  Mike writes regularly for the magazine as a registered Commodity Trading Advisor, National Futures Association.

Multnomah electronic recycling project underway

recycle

As you receive new consumer electronic gifts and prepare to discard your old goodies, think about recycling as an option.  The materials that make up your electronic gadgets are often times toxic, therefore Multnomah County is offering its residents an alternative for this toxic trash.

You can recycle your old cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, chargers and Bluetooth headsets into one of the free recycling bins at 11 locations across the county. You can find the drop boxes at libraries and other county buildings.

This program is self-sustainable.  It costs tax payers nothing to operate and even has the potential to earn the county money.  Do your part this season and recycle your out-of-date consumer electronics.

In the Gallery: Norton Young - Entry and Egress

norton young

"Painting is like archeology in reverse. Painters bury their tracks as they move from the original surface toward the final image; eliminating considerations that no longer seem necessary or that have ceased to provide routes to engagement. Fortunately, both archeologists and audiences come along to unearth and interpret their finds. Every choice I make moving forward involves the sacrifice of something else; the content underneath, discarded messages, that which is no longer clearly visible-the physical history of the work. The work is alive in the beginning, yielding to possibilities, but there will necessarily come a hardening off. In the final days, the work coalesces into an acceptable conclusion. It is “finished” because it stops asking me for further explanation. The responsibility then moves on to the observer."

Norton Young is the Department Director for the Advertising, Design Visualization, and Graphic Design departments at The Art Institute of Portland.

OPB Music Blog T-Shirt Design Contest

opb music contest

We know our listeners are creative, smart people. You’re all quite impressive when it comes down to it. So we’d like to utilize your talent and have you come up with a great new t-shirt design that we can use for opbmusic.org. What better way to roll into year number two than with some nice shiny new threads. The winning design will be used throughout the year and sold at our events, on our Web site and used for random promotional purposes that have yet to be even dreamed up. Who knows, your design could be on the lovely torso of one of your favorite musicians as they grace their way into our studios for an in-studio session.

So what’s in it for you? First off, your design will be all over opbmusic and with it, your name. What more of an ego stroker could you get? We’ll bow at your skills. Secondly, one or more of opbmusic’s DJs will be taking you and a friend out to dinner and a concert of your choice. A night on the town so-to-speak. And thirdly, we’ll invite you into the opbmusic studios for an intimate session with a local or national band.

Now that you’re primed with ideas, please read the submission rules and guidelines on this page. Please follow them—if you don’t, your incredibly wonderful design will be all for naught. If you have any specific questions, you can contact us at lalberg@opb.org.

Submit your designs by March 10th

Port Townsend Film Festival

port townsend film festival

Bringing filmmakers and filmgoers together in a community celebration of and conversation about the best cinema obtainable from a worldwide palate of genres and historic periods is the mission of the Port Townsend Film Festival (PTFF), held over a three-day period in late September each year. By providing a platform for independent voices, both contemporary and classic, PTFF engages filmmakers and audiences in a dialogue that brings people together in cultural exploration and understanding. The 10th annual Port Townsend Film Festival (PTFF) will be held September 24th - 27th, 2009.

We’re looking for anything and everything, which of course is no guidance at all, so let us try to narrow our determined eclecticism into something understandable. We’re particularly interested in:

First feature-length narrative films from which we most likely will select at least three for special presentation as we have the past five years;

Documentaries with varying, but often-topical subject matter;

Shorts in any genre (we tend to group shorts in two-hour long thematic presentations, the subjects of which aren't determined until we receive all the films)

Deadline for submissions: February 28th

Offering an artist’s perspective, Eileen Cotter Howell and Shura Young will give a presentation about their artistic process and share examples of their work. Howell and Young, both artists represented by the Rental Sales Gallery, will discuss how their work fits into the local art scene and how people who collect their art find a connection with their work. Craft in the 21st Century: Directions and Displacements, A lecture by writer, researcher, educator and instigator Glenn Adamson

thinking through craft glenn adamson

Friday, February 20th, 4:00 PM | Free

University of Oregon, 211 Lillis, 955 E 13th Ave., Eugene

Saturday, February 21st, 2:30 PM | Free

University of Oregon, White Stag Building Event Room, 70 NW Couch St.

International leader in art historical study Glenn Adamson will visit Oregon for the first time, traveling from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, on February 20th and 21st. Adamson will present Craft in the 21st Century: Directions and Displacements at the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the UO in Portland White Stag Block facility. The lectures are co-sponsored by UO and Museum of Contemporary Craft.

Glenn Adamson is head of graduate studies and deputy head of research at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. His focus of research ranges from modern craft and industrial design to English and American decorative arts during the 17th and 18th centuries. Adamson is the author of Thinking Through Craft (V&A Publications/Berg) and an editor of The Journal of Modern Craft (Berg).

Glenn Adamson is hailed by writer and historian Garth Clark as "one of craft's fresh, young, nontraditional voices." He proposes that craft is not a subcategory of art, but rather its antithesis, challenging art's most fundamental values. Framing the discussion broadly throughout contemporary aesthetic culture, Adamson will provide context for a range of visual practitioners - including fine artists, designers, architects, historians and indie crafters.

Adamson's first presentation will take place Friday, February 20th, at University of Oregon's Eugene campus at 4 PM in room 211 of the Lillis Business Complex, 955 E 13th Ave. The lecture is free and open to the public.

In Portland, on Saturday, Feb. 21, Museum of Contemporary Craft presents Adamson as the newest lecturer for its CraftPerspectives Series, an ongoing program that connects audiences with new ways to think critically about craft. Glenn Adamson will speak at 2:30 PM at the UO's White Stag Block in Old Town Portland at 70 NW Couch St. Admission is free.

The Portland lecture will be preceded by a discussion session at 6:30 PM on Thursday, Feb. 12, to review Adamson's book Thinking Through Craft. This conversation will take place at The Lab at Museum of Contemporary Craft and is free and open to the public. The session will be led by Kate Wagle, a UO professor of art and administrative director of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts' programs in Portland. Please contact education@MuseumofContemporaryCraft.org for a free copy of the excerpt to be discussed.

Please join YWSE when we present Peter Korchnak who will discuss Personal and Professional Branding in the Social Media Era. The boundaries between our personal and professional identities have blurred with the advent of web 2.0. The personal and the professional are now one. Employers use online social networking sites to learn about job applicants, who scour the internet for information about their interviewers. Buyers google contractors to get a picture of their customer satisfaction and their background; service providers join communities to find out their prospects' payment history. More than ever, transparency and focus are central to success. In this presentation, we'll review the ways your personal and professional identities have merged. And we'll examine the process and tools of creating and managing your personal and professional brand to build trust, cultivate relationships, and achieve your goals.

19th Cascade Festival of African Films

african film festival

Friday, February 6th - Saturday, March 7th

The festival, started nearly 20 years ago by four members of the PCC faculty, features films (nearly all of which have African directors), across all topics and genres, but giving us a unique first-hand look at Africa, it's people, and culture. On opening night there will be two showings (7pm and 9pm) of the film "Zaïna" (winner of the Jury Award for "Best Feature" at the 2007 Pan-African Film Festival), a drama set in 19th Century Morocco.

In addition to watching these great movies, they have arranged to have a number of talks and Q&A sessions with directors, producers, and other special guests, often immediately after a film.

Thursdays from 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

February 19, March 5th, March 19th

Take some time out for yourself! Come work on creative projects in a supportive atmosphere, with other like-minded women. We will also focus on learning to give and receive non-judgmental feedback, as well as asking for what we need for ourselves and getting those needs met. All levels or styles of creative experience are welcome. We will be using a variety of art and craft materials, feel free to use what's in the studio, or bring ephemera, 1/2 finished projects, or materials that are special to you (trust us: we'd love to see them!).

Free for members of the 100th Monkey Studio! $20 general public
